Tips and Tricks for PSPO II Certification Preparation
PSPO II is an advanced level Product Owner assessment. The most significant emphasis is on the Focus Areas listed under Managing Products with Agility, followed by Focus Areas from Evolving the Agile Organization. The PSPO II Certification Exam can be divided into three main areas:
- Scrum Knowledge — including working at scale, responsibilities, and interactions with stakeholders
- Product Knowledge — how to maximize value, backlog management, and metrics
- Practical Application — real-life scenarios focusing on collaboration with stakeholders and Scrum Teams
Multiple Readings: The Scrum Guide should be read 3–4 times until the terminology and concepts become second nature. Focus on understanding the mental model behind questions rather than memorizing answers.
- Scrum Guide 2020: The foundational document that must be thoroughly understood. Focus on the Product Owner role, Product Goal, and empirical process control.
- Evidence-Based Management (EBM) Guide: Critical for understanding value measurement and data-driven decision making, including the Key Value Areas (Current Value, Unrealized Value, Ability to Innovate).
- Nexus Guide: Essential for understanding scaled Scrum environments and the Product Owner’s role across multiple teams.
- Practice Empirical Thinking: Think in terms of inspection, adaptation, and transparency. Apply empiricism in complex situations.
- Evidence-Based Management Mastery: Understand Key Value Areas and Metrics for business strategy questions.
- Study Product Market Fit, Business Strategy, Stakeholder Engagement, Kanban, Backlog Management, Scrum Guide, Nexus Guide, Empirical Management, ROI, and Measuring Value.
- Review the EBM Guide multiple times to grasp terminology, leading vs. lagging indicators, maximizing product value, and the four Key Value Areas (KVA).
- Review Product Ownership: Learn practical techniques and examples useful during the exam.
- Understand Product Vision, Strategy, MVP, Business Strategy, Stakeholder & Customer Management, and Value Delivery.
Become familiar with key Product Owner responsibilities:
- How do Product Owners connect the product vision to strategy and goals?
- How do Product Owners identify what customers value most?
- How do Product Owners involve stakeholders and the Scrum Team?
- How do Product Owners refine and prioritize the product backlog collaboratively?
- How is backlog ordering handled to deliver maximum value?
- What frameworks guide Product Owners in value-based prioritization?
- How do Product Owners manage estimates, forecasts, and release plans?
- How do Product Owners manage stakeholder expectations?
Tips on answering questions
- Read questions and answers very carefully, every word matters — you can be tricked easily (look out for words like: “must”, “can’t”, “may”, and “might”).
- When answering, look for the best alternative, instead of trying to find the best answer. The context of questions is very often not clear enough.
- There is enough time to answer questions — don’t rush, take your time. It took me about 30 minutes to go through all questions, and review provided answers.
Time Management Strategy:
- First pass: Answer known questions immediately (aim for 30–35 minutes).
- Second pass: Tackle marked questions requiring more thought.
- Final review: Ensure no questions are left unanswered.
Common Challenges:
- Portfolio Management and Business Strategy: Many candidates struggle with these areas, particularly if they haven’t had exposure to strategic product planning in their current roles.
- Evidence-Based Management: Understanding and applying EBM concepts is crucial but often underestimated by candidates.
- Time Management: With only 60 minutes for 40 questions, effective time management is critical.
